To Twitter or To Facebook...that is the question...

How does one reach new audiences online for a low cost? I'll keep you posted. But here's a start.

We just convinced a client with much twisting of appendages to join Twitter. They have a niche market with a good number of eNewsletter subscribers. She asked "do I have to tell them what I'm having for dinner and crap like that"...uh, no, not unless you want to, but I highly recommend against that since we are promoting a business and a product line.

What the heck does Twitter do for you? It gives you a highly searchable presence on the Internet to "pull" clients to you instead of "pushing" yourself onto them. All of you marketers know the difference. With the "pull" concept, or should I say "lure", you are putting out relevant information that your interested audience can target.

They target you. You just need to be you.

Google-search me using NotesFromKris (my 'branding') and you will see Twitter show up as the 2nd link; only 2nd to my outdated notesfromkris.com domain. Why? Because I Twitter under my username. Now Google search Kristina McInerny - AGAIN - a Twitter link. Amazing?! No.

Consistent branding and correlation between my name and my username.

If I consistently Twittered on "choco andes mountain coffee" regularly, then you would see my Twitter account link show up if you Googled that phrase.

Rocket science? Nope. Consistency and relevance? Yes.

Now look for my client. http://search.twitter.com with 'aviation art'. SamLyonsArt is the 3rd (!!) link and I've only placed ONE tweet in there yesterday, but I named their account SamLyonsArt and used the phrase 'aviation art' in a relevant tweet.

Eventually, Google (and other search engines, not to show favorites, but they are #1 on Alexa) will find them if they tweet about more than their eating habits. Footnote http://alexa.com/topsites

Good start, eh? More on Facebook later. I personally use it to keep up on my friends' drinking habits and vacations, so I'm not sure yet how to leverage that avenue. Baby steps. Baby steps.

Wow - that is interesting. Finally clears it up for me how twitter can be used as a marketing tool - it's all about the searching and rankings.

Thanks, Kris. Good information for anyone tentative about using Twitter. It's always easier to sell products and services when the client comes to you.
