Work From Home Schedule

Do you find that working from home can be challenging at best?

I'm between jobs and looking for another one (not everyone needs this), so I do some work for non-profits to keep up to date (http://notesfromkris.com/portfolio) and keep my organizational brain sharp by leading a Social Media Meetup.com group (Join CobbSocialMedia).

Here's what I do to start my day.

Personal Habits
  1. Get up by 6:00; shower, stretch, clothe.
  2. Complete any 'home' work. (start laundry, check emails, pay bills online).
  3. Walk child to the busstop at 7:20am - it wakes me up and gets the day started; she's old enough to go on her own, but if I sleep in...there goes precious time.
  4. Take the long way home; stretch.
  5. If still motivated, do sit-ups and push-ups.
  6. Eat breakfast high in protein, low in carbs.
  7. Make coffee, fill water bottle, take vitamins, place in office.
Work Habits
  1. If Monday, then review last week's like of 'stuff to do' and morph it into this week.
  2. If not Monday, look at weekly list of 'stuff to do' and rearrange/update the whole week if necessary.
  3. Create chunks of time associated with tasks for the next 2 days.  (Typically, you know what needs to get accomplished within the week; some of which are repetitive, like reading email or industry articles/books.  Other stuff can be one time, eg: call Stephanie from ABC Recruting.)
  4. Review scheduled appointments; if prep time is needed, add to calendar.
  5. Print today's schedule or update whiteboard it and keep within sight.
  6. Create a reward system eg: if I complete all of my stuff before noon, I get to read 2 chapters of a fiction novel or watch music videos or if dark chocolate is in the house...
  7. Eat lunch after tasks labeled 'before noon' are accomplished;  high veggie content, some protein, some carb.
  8. At noon-ish while eating, check email again, surf Facebook or something personal.
  9. Incorporate any 'home' work you need to do; car's oil change, etc - but leave all of the family stuff for night (shopping, laundry, etc) until you've mastered making the most of your 'work' day.
Always always incorporate into the week:
  • job search of some capacity: phone calls or job searches with an application
  • keeping up with your industry: reading a book (fiction) or researching the internet for the buzz
  • 2-4 walking breaks that entail 1) getting the mail, 2) going up and down some stairs and 3) stretching
  • getting out of the house for a business meeting
Well, this was helpful to me...the point is, you need to plan or else your days will get away from you.

I also attach larger rewards to getting ahead of schedule.  You need to treat yourself like an employee and a boss.

Excellent Customer Service in Social Media

In my Facebook Personal account, I "like" City of Marietta to see what's going on near me and with city government.

I recently posted a comment to one of their posts and they responded in what I would call 'record time'.  I wasn't being facetious - I really would love to work for a company that already gets it.

Someone over at the city is being vigilant to the demands of a digital audience and they're being personal.  THIS is true social media.

Seeking Social Media Job

As I've always said: now is the time to stop (solely) looking to role models and to start becoming one!

Keep yourself busy and keep networking!

I've started a revitalization effort downtown in Atlanta's original business district on Mitchell Street by the Federal Building.  "Like it" on Facebook if you'd like to follow our progress: http://www.facebook.com/HotelRowHistoricDistrict

I'm on Twitter as NotesFromKris if you'd like to follow me personally or go to www.NotesFromKris.com to find out more about my background.

Also on http://linkedin.com/in/kmcinerny for work experience and references.

Of Cabbages and Things

The time has come to talk of many things...of future work and values.

I've quit work to take on further education and community service volunteer work by taking a PM Cert course at KSU -  4 - 6wk courses given online. It counts towards work hours for a PMP which I'm not sure if I will be taking it or not. My purpose is to refine my management skills by the book and take a more serious look at my future.

Also working on the Hotel Row Historic District Revitalization Project - self-appointed - in concert with August 3rd's National Night Out plus the creation of a brochure and joining the Concierge Society of Atlanta.

"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"

Calloo, Callay, come run away!

Time is Nigh

There comes a time in life when you need to stop (solely) looking up to role models and start becoming a role model.  I'll say it another way; start becoming the role model to whom you wish to aspire.  (someone correct my grammar please if needed)

I'm not telling you to stop respecting others or stop looking up to others; but at some point in your life you need to start living your life wholly and sincerely.

You know what's right and what's wrong.

You already know that becoming healthy involves eating your veggies and exercising regularly no matter what the latest trend is or what the magazines are saying.

You already know that to increase your knowledge you need to read more non-fiction and pay attention to local and global news.

You already know that to pass a test, you need to pay attention in class and do your homework.

If Nike hasn't said it enough, darn it, Just Do It!

Attraction Occurs

When we live our life in a positive manner, we attract those of the same ilk. Here's your homework:

Next time you are in a public area, put yourself into a smile (don't just smile; put a bounce in your step) and make eye contact with people you pass and just nod. Most of them will reflect what they see and either nod or say hello. (Is that legal in NYC? just kidding...)

When we grump through life, we miss a lot of smiles.
